Friday 10/20/1962: Cash and Pinson win Most Valuable Player Award It was a day to remember for Detroit's Norm Cash, who won the AL Most Valuable Player Award today. It put the finishing touches on what has been a tremendous season for the slugger. Norm is hitting .331 this year, with 186 hits in 562 at bats. He has driven in 160 runs, slugging .730. He's 8th in the AL in batting, 1st in homeruns and 2nd in RBI! The 1962 NL Most Valuable Player Award winner has been announced as well. It's Chicago (N)'s centerfielder Vada Pinson who really had a great offensive year. His season features a batting average of .360 (230 hits in 639 AB), 46 doubles, 10 triples and 31 taters. Friday 10/20/1962: Minnesota's Powell earns Rookie Of The Year Award Minnesota's first baseman Boog Powell has worked hard to reach the big leagues. His work paid off today as the AL named him the Rookie Of The Year Award winner! This year Powell drove in 117 and scored 97 runs while batting .305 with 39 taters. The NL Rookie Of The Year Award winner was announced today as well, with St. Louis (N)'s leftfielder Billy Williams earning the trophy for putting up the best numbers among rookies in his league. Williams has hit 32 bombs this year while batting .307. He adds 27 doubles, along with 103 runs scored. |
Monday 10/9/1962: Philadelphia (N)'s Washburn wins Player of the Week award Jim Lemon from Chicago (A) wins his 4th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the AL. Jim pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .375 with 4 HR and 11 RBI while slugging 1.188. He now has homered in 4 consecutive games as well! It's the 1st time that the NL Player of the Week award goes to Philadelphia (N)'s pitcher Ray Washburn. Washburn was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 2.00. Along the way he struck out 13 in 18 innings. He was able to complete both starts of the week. In 36 starts this year Ray struck out 175 batters in 304.1 innings of work. Sunday 10/8/1962: Bob Friend shuts out Chicago (N) on 2 hits LOS ANGELES (N) - With his best stuff going, Los Angeles (N)'s Bob Friend overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Chicago (N) had no chance, collecting just 2 hits against the right-hander. Friend (27-16) fanned 8 and walked 1, throwing 94 pitches. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Saturday 9/30/1962: New York (A)'s Mantle out for the season NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s centerfielder Mickey Mantle suffered a season ending injury when he hurt himself diving for a ball. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. New York (A) wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Mantle had suffered a Broken Hip. His season features a batting average of .345 (182 hits in 527 AB), 31 doubles, 3 triples and 49 taters. Mantle collected 130 RBI and 157 runs as well. Tuesday 9/26/1962: Luis Aparicio ropes four hits, completes cycle MINNESOTA - Luis Aparicio is a pretty good hitter, but his 4 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself considering that the hits added up to the cycle, one of the most difficult things to accomplish in baseball. A double off George Brunet in the 2nd inning accounted for his 2nd hit. A single in the 4th off George Brunet accounted for his 3rd hit. Number 4 in the 6th inning, a shot estimated at 388 feet, cleared the wall in left field. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Saturday 5/27/1962: Frank Smith shuts out San Francisco on 2 hits SAN FRANCISCO - Cincinnati's right-hander Frank Smith is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking San Francisco on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 31st time he has done it in his career. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Smith (8-4) fanned 7 and walked none, throwing 102 pitches. Cincinnati's leftfielder Bill White stroked 3 hits in 4 AB, blasting a homerun, stroking a double, with FOUR runs scored and collecting 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Smith. Cincinnati improved its record to 26-22, scoring 7 runs on 14 hits. |
Monday 5/22/1962: Norm Cash on fire, crushes three LOS ANGELES (A) - Norm Cash was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Detroit to a 7-4 win over Los Angeles (A) by homering three times. Number 1 in the 5th inning, a shot estimated at 435 feet, cleared the wall in right field. It tied the ballgame at 3. His 2nd shot, off Jim Bouton in the 7th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in center field. That one tied it at 4 runs apiece. In the 9th inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Jack Meyer. Norm stroked 4 hits in 5 AB, scoring three runs with 6 RBI. |
Monday 5/22/1962: Boston's Mays wins Player of the Week award Boston's centerfielder Willie Mays had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the AL Player of the Week. In 26 at bats he hit .423 with 3 HR and 7 RBI. Willie is hitting .310 this year, with 49 hits in 158 at bats. He has driven in 26 runs, slugging .614. It's the 3rd time that the NL Player of the Week award goes to Los Angeles (N)'s third baseman Andy Carey. In 22 at bats he hit .591 with 4 HR and 13 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 11 games. |
Monday 5/15/1962: Lee Walls found the stroke, smashes three homers ST. LOUIS (N) - Hitting homeruns is one of the most difficult things in sports. To hit three of them in one game is almost sensational. St. Louis (N)'s leftfielder Lee Walls accomplished that feat in a 16-5 win over Philadelphia (N). A 362 foot drive to left field marked his 1st bomb, a solo homerun off Dave Wickersham in the 4th inning. A pitch from Murray Wall in the 6th inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 409 feet from home plate in left-center. Number 3 in the 8th inning, a shot estimated at 413 feet, cleared the wall in left-center. Lee collected 4 hits in 4 trips to the plate, with FOUR runs scored with 6 RBI. In 2622 career at bats, he has hit 133 homeruns and collected 430 RBI. St. Louis (N) scored 16 runs on 14 hits. |
Monday 5/15/1962: Player of the Week honors go to Cash and Freese It's the 4th time that the AL Player of the Week award goes to Detroit's first baseman Norm Cash. Thursday 5/11/1962: Houston has no chance in a 1-hitter by Steve Barber HOUSTON - St. Louis (N)'s Steve Barber overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Houston had no chance, collecting just one hit against the left-hander. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Barber (6-1) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 2, throwing 125 pitches. Gene Freese provided St. Louis (N) with the offense Barber needed as he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, homering once, stroking a double, scoring three runs and collecting 2 RBI. The final score of the game was 7-0. |
Tuesday 5/9/1962: Del Crandall ropes 2000th career hit BALTIMORE - Baltimore's rightfielder Del Crandall was in good mood after the game against Chicago (A), and he had every reason as he made some history while collecting his 2000th career hit. His hit in the 7th inning was a triple off Arnold Earley. Along with his 2000 hits, Del collected 290 homeruns and 1100 RBI in 13 seasons. 'This day is special, I'll probably remember it my whole life. Thank god I'm blessed with the talent to play this game.' |
Monday 5/8/1962: Siebern and Pinson win Player of the Week award The Player of the Week award in the AL goes to Washington's Norm Siebern this time, as the first baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He hit .500 with 12 RBI and slugged 1.077 in 26 at bats. Vada Pinson wins his 1st Player of the Week award. NL pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He hit .607 with 12 RBI and slugged 1.071 in 28 at bats. |
Saturday 5/6/1962: Pete Whisenant (CLE) will miss 5-6 weeks CLEVELAND - Cleveland's Pete Whisenant suffered a serious injury Saturday in a game against Minnesota. Whisenant fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 5-6 weeks. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Pulled Anterior Cruciate Ligament. This year Whisenant drove in 24 and scored 20 runs while batting .353 with 8 homeruns. He's 7th in the AL in batting! |
Monday 5/1/1962: Stone and Smith receive Pitcher of the Month award New York (A)'s Dean Stone had a terrific April, and it earned him the AL Pitcher of the month award. He had an ERA of just 1.40 in 45 innings of work in which he struck out 32 hitters. His record in April is 5-1. Dean fired two shutouts! It's the 18th time that the NL Pitcher of the Month award goes to Cincinnati's pitcher Frank Smith. His ERA of just 2.42 helped him to a 5-2 record in April. He worked 52 innings, striking out 49 hitters while walking 9. Frank also fired a shutout. |
Monday 5/1/1962: Red hot Mathews and Demeter win Batter of the Month award The AL's best player of the month was New York (A)'s Eddie Mathews, who wins the award for the 6th time in his career. Eddie was on fire, hitting .330 with 13 homeruns and 42 RBI. The Batter of the Month award in the NL goes to Pittsburgh's Don Demeter this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Don was on fire, hitting .376 with 9 homeruns and 33 RBI. |

Saturday 4/29/1962: Chicago (N)'s Robinson out for the season CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s rightfielder Frank Robinson will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Chicago (N) and San Francisco. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Robinson collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Ruptured Medial Collateral Ligament. Surgery will be performed next week. His season numbers are: .405 AVG, 34 hits, 9 doubles, no triples and 7 taters, along with 20 RBI and 25 runs scored. He's 1st in the NL in batting, 6th in homeruns and 9th in RBI! |
Saturday 4/29/1962: Boston's Ken Boyer goes deep three times BOSTON - Boston beat New York (A) 13-12, but that was not the real story of the game. Ken Boyer was, as he went deep three times. In the 5th inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Whitey Ford. His 2nd blast, a three-run homerun off Whitey Ford in the 6th inning, landed an estimated 328 feet from home plate. A pitch from Howie Koplitz in the 9th inning left his bat for a three-run homerun, landing 432 feet from home plate in left field. His final blast of the game capped his performance as it won the game, setting the crowd on fire! Ken finished with 5 hits in 6 AB, scoring three times with 9 RBI. His homerun total this year is 6, along with 27 RBI. |
Friday 4/28/1962: Gil Mcdougald out for 9 weeks PHILADELPHIA (N) - Philadelphia (N)'s second baseman Gil Mcdougald will miss about 9 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 8th inning of the game between Philadelphia (N) and Milwaukee. He fielded a ball off the bat of Frank Howard, threw a bullet to first and immediately signaled that he's not OK. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Ruptured Tricep Tendon which will require surgery. Gil is hitting .321 this year, with 27 hits in 84 at bats. He has driven in 19 runs, slugging .631. He's 9th in the NL in RBIs and 9th in homeruns! |
Monday 4/24/1962: Robinson (DET) and Bailey (CIN) win P.O.W. award Brooks Robinson from Detroit wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the AL. He hit .455 with 11 RBI and slugged .758 in 33 at bats. The NL Player of the Week award goes to Ed Bailey, Cincinnati's starting centerfielder. Bailey helped his team with an average of .552 and 10 RBI in 29 at bats. |
Friday 4/21/1962: Joe Black shuts out Los Angeles (A) on 2 hits LOS ANGELES (A) - Age doesn't matter. At least Baltimore's right-hander Joe Black shares this opinion. The 38 year old pitched a 2-hit shutout against Los Angeles (A), recording his 1st shutout of the season. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Sandy Amoros singled with one out in the 5th inning. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Black (1-0) fanned 7 and walked none, throwing 109 pitches. Maury Wills provided Baltimore with the offense Black needed as he went 1 for 5, blasting a homerun. Baltimore improved its record to 7-9, scoring 3 runs on 10 hits. |
Thursday 4/20/1962: Frank Smith fires 2-hitter against Houston CINCINNATI - Great days are rare. But not for Cincinnati's right-hander Frank Smith. Houston found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 30th time he has done it in his career. Smith (4-1) struck out 6 and issued 1 BB, throwing 76 of 124 pitches for strikes. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' The hitting star for Cincinnati was centerfielder Ed Bailey, he stroked 2 hits in 5 AB. Cincinnati improved its record to 10-5, scoring 3 runs on 10 hits. |
Thursday 4/20/1962: Pete Richert out for 5 weeks KANSAS CITY - Kansas City is without its ace Pete Richert for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Johnny Roseboro in a game against Baltimore. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Kansas City wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Richert had suffered a Herniated Disc Back. Pete has a record of 1-2 this season, with an ERA of 6.69. In 35 Innings he was able to strike out 16 batters. |

The 25-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against San Francisco on Wednesday. Fisher (2-0) fanned 3 and walked 4, throwing 117 pitches. 'Hey, that's my job! He got up slowly and had to leave the game. Duke Snider will miss at least 4 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Broken Hand which will require surgery. Washington's right-hander Bob Gibson will not pitch for at least 4-5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Detroit where he left the field in the 3rd inning. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Rotator Cuff Muscle. In 3 starts this year Bob struck out 11 batters in 15.2 innings of work. His ERA is 8.04, his record 1-1. |

Thursday 4/6/1962: Dean Stone turns in great performance against Washington WASHINGTON - Dean Stone had his best stuff going, and Washington hitters were chanceless. New York (A)'s lefty fired a 2-hitter, his 1st shutout of the season. With two outs in the 5th inning Eddie Bressoud singled to break up the no-hitter. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Stone (1-0) struck out 6 and walked 1, throwing 59 of 102 pitches for strikes.
